Private John S. Grant
The background of this North Irish Horseman is not certain. He may be the John Stuart Grant born on 4 June 1894 at Labbadish, Letterkenny, County Donegal, the fourth of seven children of school teachers John Stuart Grant and Agnes Grant (nee McNally). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Labbadish with his widowed mother and three siblings.
Grant enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 4 and 10 March 1914 (No.920 – later Corps of Hussars No.71160). He embarked for France with A Squadron on 17 August 1914, seeing action on the retreat from Mons and advance to the Aisne.
Grant remained with the regiment throughout the war. On 15 March 1919 he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
After the war Grant returned to Donegal, where he became a farmer. On 28 October 1925 he married Margaret Elizabeth Robinson at the Second Ray Presbyterian Church, Errity, County Donegal.
On the reverse of the above postcard, produced by photographer Frank Coghlan of Carlisle Road, Londonderry, is written "Yours Sincerely, J. S. Grant, NIH."
